“These are exactly the sentiments that turned me into an activist in my wild, youthful days. I got mad because we — the musicians, the artists, the writers — struggled constantly against the same handful of corporations everywhere. The Internet changed all that…and that still remains threatened. None of it happens by accident. There’s a cozy connection between these corporations and the policies made in Washington that allow them to maintain all the power. Get involved with groups like Free Press and Future of Music Coalition…fight back.”

MUSICIANS, SHARE YOUR STORIES

IF YOU ARE AN INDEPENDENT MUSICIAN STRUGGLING TO MAKE ENDS MEET, THE #OCCUPY MOVEMENT IS RELEVANT TO YOU. CORPORATE GREED HAS STIFLED THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. JUST LIKE THE REST OF THE WORLD, GLOBALIZATION AND CORPORATE CONSOLIDATION HAVE LED TO A MUSIC CULTURE WHERE THE RICH GET RICHER AND THE POOR GET POORER.

THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS DOMINATED BY JUST FOUR CORPORATE LABELS: UNIVERSAL MUSIC GROUP, SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, WARNER MUSIC GROUP, AND EMI. A 2005 STUDY FOUND THAT THESE FOUR LABELS OWN 81.7% OF THE US MUSIC MARKET.

IN JANUARY 2010 THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE APPROVED A MERGER BETWEEN TICKETMASTER, THE LARGEST TICKETING PLATFORM IN THE COUNTRY, AND LIVE NATION, THE LARGEST CONCERT PROMOTER IN THE COUNTRY.

IN THE YEAR 2011, A WAR IS BEING WAGED ON PUBLIC, COMMUNITY, AND COLLEGE RADIO, WHILE CLEAR CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS — A CORPORATION THAT IS THE LARGEST OWNER OF RADIO STATIONS IN THE I.S. — MAKES AN ESTIMATED $6.82 BILLION IN REVENUE EACH YEAR.

THE GOVERNMENT IS ALLOWING CORPORATE MERGERS BETWEEN T-MOBILE AND AT&T, THREATENING NETWORK NEUTRALITY A.K.A. THE OPEN INTERNET, WHICH OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS HAS ALLOWED INDEPENDENT MUSICIANS TO CONNECT AND FLOURISH. DO YOU WANT CORPORATIONS CONTROLLING WHAT WE SEE ON THE INTERNET TOO?

AS OF 2010, BIG-BOX STORES LIKE WAL-MART AND BEST BUY SELL MORE RECORDS THAN MUSIC-ONLY STORES. THE WORLD’S LARGEST MUSIC STORE IS THE iTUNES STORE.

IS A U.S. MUSIC MARKET OWNED BY MORE THAN A FEW MAJOR CORPORATIONS POSSIBLE?

SUBMIT YOUR THOUGHTS & STORIES @ HTTP://OCCUPYTHEMUSICINDUSTRY.TUMBLR.COM
